There is no single “right” width for a media wall fire. The best size is the one that looks balanced within the finished wall and gives you enough room for the television, side features and the exact fire’s required installation space.

Start with the finished wall width

Measure the intended finished face of the media wall, not just the clear wall behind it. Then allow for any shelves, side units, lighting reveals or artwork before choosing a fire. A wider fire can be an excellent focal point, but it should not leave the design looking cramped.

Common media wall fire sizes

• 50-inch class: useful for compact rooms and narrower feature walls.
• 60-inch class: a versatile choice where the wall is not especially narrow or especially wide.
• 71-inch class: works well where the fire and TV need more visual presence.
• 80-inch class and above: best reserved for wider walls with enough breathing room around the installation.

These are starting points, not construction measurements. Always use the exact product’s overall dimensions and opening drawing.

Should the fire be wider than the TV?

There is no rule that applies to every room. Some people prefer the fire a little wider than the television to anchor the wall; others prefer a narrower fire with shelving or cabinetry taking the visual width. What matters is that the two elements look intentional together, rather than like unrelated rectangles stacked on a wall.

Test the proportion before building

1. Mark the intended fire and TV widths on the wall with low-tack tape.
2. Step back to view it from the main seating position.
3. Add the proposed shelf or side-unit widths to the plan.
4. Check the selected fire’s manual before the framework is fixed.

Do not choose from the size label alone

“60-inch” and “71-inch” describe a market size, not necessarily the same visible flame opening or outer width across brands. Compare drawings rather than assuming a like-for-like fit.
